Solar-Cage™ – Engineered for Safer Battery Installations

Helping installers meet the intent of PAS 63100:2024

The rapid growth of domestic battery storage has changed the way installers approach residential solar projects. As battery systems become larger and more common, greater emphasis is being placed on installation location, fire protection, ventilation and mechanical protection.

The publication of PAS 63100:2024 – Electrical installations – Protection against fire of battery energy storage systems for use in dwellings has provided the industry with a recognised benchmark for good practice in battery installation design. While PAS 63100 is a Publicly Available Specification rather than legislation, it is increasingly being adopted by manufacturers, installers, housing providers and insurers as the benchmark for safer battery installations.

At Wireguards UK, we’ve developed the Solar-Cage™ range specifically to support installers looking for secure, practical enclosure solutions that align with the principles of PAS 63100.

Solar-Cage Guardian A1™

Part Number: SCF1800-1000-500-A1P

The Guardian A1 has been developed as a freestanding external enclosure for locations where wall mounting is either unsuitable or where additional flexibility is required.

It incorporates:

  • 1800 × 1000 × 500 mm enclosure
  • Freestanding design
  • Heavy-duty rubber support feet
  • Universal side mounting plates
  • Lockable access door
  • Galvanised steel construction
  • Including 15 mm A1 fire-rated rear barrier system (in accordance with EN13501-1:2002)
  • Excellent natural ventilation through open mesh side panels

The Guardian A1 is particularly suited to:

  • Garden battery installations
  • Commercial premises
  • Housing association projects
  • Retrofit properties
  • Sites where wall mounting is not practical

Designed Around PAS 63100 Principles

PAS 63100 places considerable emphasis on reducing the consequences of a battery fire through good installation design rather than relying on any single product.

The specification encourages:

  • locating batteries outdoors where practicable;
  • maintaining appropriate clearances;
  • ensuring adequate ventilation;
  • reducing fire spread to the dwelling;
  • providing suitable mechanical protection for equipment.

These are exactly the design principles that have influenced the Solar-Cage range.

How Solar-Cage Supports Good Practice

Outdoor Installation

Both Solar-Cage models are intended for external installation where appropriate, supporting the PAS recommendation that outdoor battery locations are preferred whenever practicable.

Excellent Ventilation

Unlike fully enclosed cabinets, the Solar-Cage design uses welded wire mesh to maximise natural airflow around the battery and inverter while still providing physical protection.

This helps maintain equipment performance and reduces unnecessary heat build-up.

Mechanical Protection

The heavy-duty galvanised steel construction provides a robust protective enclosure against accidental damage, tampering and vandalism while maintaining accessibility for servicing.

Flexible Equipment Mounting

Universal mounting plates allow installers to securely mount:

  • Isolators
  • Junction boxes
  • Monitoring equipment
  • Communication devices
  • Ancillary electrical accessories without modifying the enclosure.

Designed for Installers

Every feature has been developed with installers in mind.

Benefits include:

  • Quick installation
  • Excellent equipment access
  • Secure lockable enclosure
  • Clean cable management
  • Reduced installation time
  • Long service life
  • Low maintenance

Fox ESS Approved

Wireguards UK is pleased that Fox ESS has approved our Solar-Cage products for use with its installations.

This provides installers with confidence that the enclosure has been reviewed for compatibility with Fox ESS equipment. (Approval relates to compatibility with Fox ESS products and should not be interpreted as certification against PAS 63100 or other third-party standards.)

Important Note

Solar-Cage enclosures are designed to support installations that follow the principles of PAS 63100:2024, but compliance with PAS 63100 depends on the complete installation, including the battery, inverter, location, clearances, fire separation, ventilation, wiring and installation workmanship. The enclosure is one part of the overall installation solution.

Looking Ahead

As battery storage becomes increasingly common throughout the UK, installers need enclosure systems that deliver:

  • Security
  • Durability
  • Ventilation
  • Flexible installation
  • Future-proof design
  • Support for recognised industry good practice

The Solar-Cage Wall Mount and Solar-Cage Guardian A1 (SCF1800-1000-500-A1P) have been developed to meet these needs, giving installers a practical, professional solution for modern battery and inverter installations.
